Resolutions – love them, hate them, value them or think they are useless, any way you slice it, setting goals and focusing on what you want is a tried and true step to getting there. New Year’s actually has little to do with it. This is a good practice for… whenever. But since it is that time of year and people are thinking about which diet or exercise plan they will nail down their willpower for come January 1, I feel compelled to pipe up. Wait, don’t rush into anything yet! Before you find a new way to diet, workout, detox, cleanse, let’s talk about a sleep resolution.
But first things first. I know you are more excited about something that you think will take your life to the next level, not just snoozing. So, I suggest the following and then we’ll talk about a sleep resolution.
Reflection Time
If you haven’t done this already, today or tomorrow is a great time to carve out a few minutes for some reflection.
Grab a warm drink, a journal and sit quietly for 20 minutes reflecting on the past year…
- what have you achieved?
- what challenges did you face?
- how did overcome these challenges?
- what were some of your most amazing moments?
I’m sure you’ll be amazed at what comes up.
It’s also a time to look ahead to the New Year and set some intentions (goals, resolutions, etc) for 2018.
Your intentions are your thoughts directed toward a desired outcome and are a powerful influence on whether or not you achieve what you want.
“Our intention is everything. Nothing happens on this planet without it. Not one single thing has ever been accomplished without intention.” – Jim Carrey
“All that we are is the result of what we have thought. The mind is everything. What we think we become.” – Buddha
“Intention is the starting point of every dream. It is the creative power that fulfills all of our needs, whether for money, relationships, health, spiritual awakening, or love.” – Deepak Chopra
Over the years, we’ve learned that there are a few basics things that empower the act of setting intentions:
1. Set aside some time to focus on the task.
2. Write them down.
3. Feel the emotion that each intention brings into your life (e.g. if you want to lose weight, you need to turn into how you would feel at your ideal weight and release that feeling into the Universe).
4. Take action, by either going full out or taking small steps to reach it.
This last step is where people often get lost.
If you don’t have a plan, a method, support or accountability, you may not be motivated to continue on the path forward.
According to a recent ComRes poll, the most common New Year’s resolutions include:
- Exercise more (38 percent)
- Lose weight (33 percent)
- Eat more healthily (32 percent)
- Take a more active approach to health (15 percent)
But…in order to be successful in any of these areas, you first need to master your sleep.
The most fundamental thing for your health…before diet, exercise, and everything else is sleep.
Most people we talk to and work with, have sleep issues and dismiss the importance of sleep on their health.
But, really, sleep is the magic bullet. Once you master your sleep, you get side-effects that include:
- increase in metabolism
- maintenance of a healthy weight
- balancing of hormones
- improved ability to fight off infections
- better brain function and sharper focus
- better ability to cope with stress
- reduced risk of multiple chronic illnesses
Getting quality sleep is more than just the right quantity of sleep. It is the backbone of all health improvements and a major key to being a top performer.
